Gay Marriage

You’ve heard about Iowa. You’ve heard about Vermont. But have you heard about this?

The Washington Post reports that the DC Council approved a bill today recognizing same sex marriages from other states.

Council member Jim Graham said “I hope this city recognizes this is a human rights struggle.”

This is a question of equality and justice. In years to come gay marriage will become legal in every state, and millions will marry and live in happiness. The horror.

It’ll happen because our brothers, sisters, neighbors, children, bosses and Sunday school teachers are all gay. African Americans, Caucasians, Hispanics, Asian Americans and Native peoples – a racial rainbow united in gayness. Lawyers, doctors, technicians, accountants, veterinarians, and Starbucks baristas: all gay. We all know someone who’s gay whether we know it or not, and the will to oppress will weaken as the desire for freedom, now tasted, grows stronger. Gays are on the march.

It’s times like this that I wish I was gay.

Our children will look back on us and wonder and marvel at our bigotry, just as we look back those few decades and wonder and marvel at the time when interracial marriage was illegal.

I understand the fear that many people have for change. And I sympathize. But the desire for a discriminatory status quo is no excuse for inaction – especially when it entails the oppression of millions of people.
